Assassination of Patrice Lumumba - Sourcing Activity in Google Classroom

Assassination of Patrice Lumumba - Sourcing Activity

You will be playing the role of a historian to practice critical reading and thinking skills. Historians make claims based upon evidence in historical sources. In order to gather credible evidence, historians evaluate the reliability, or trustworthiness, of different historical sources. They often do this by considering the point of view and motivations of different historical actors and by comparing how different sources portray historical events. These are all skills that directly transfer to your skills as a reader, writer, and speaker.
You will work on sourcing and contextualizing five documents on the assassination of Patrice Lumumba. First look at the PowerPoint slides to give you some historical context, then read the sources included in the Assassination of Lumumba Worksheet and answer the Guiding Questions for each source. Then you will develop a claim addressing the lesson's Central Historical Question: Why was Patrice Lumumba Assassinated?

It's your job to compare and contrast the different accounts of the fight and figure out what happened and who should be suspended. Be sure to consider the reliability of the information you're getting based on the source. Ask yourself, can I trust what this source is telling me? Are they biased or impartial? Writing in the Time of Coronavirus in Google Classroom

Writing in the Time of Coronavirus

Throughout this trimester, you will be writing a series of reflections, observations, and introspections about this new world we all find ourselves living in all of the sudden.

First, create a Google Document which will be used to collect and submit your various journal entries throughout this trimester. Name this document "Fall Writing Journal [insert your first and last name here]". Then share this document with Mr. Leech's email: [email protected] (you will NOT need to share this document again once it has been shared, just keep adding to it throughout the trimester). Now you're ready to start writing! Please number your entries to make it easier for me to grade.

Your first writing prompt is simple, what has your experience with the COVID-19 pandemic been like so far? What has been hard? What/who is helping you get through it? How have you been filling the hours you usually spend at school? Are you working? Or suddenly unemployed? What worries you about the future? Have you experienced any "silver linings" or unexpectedly positive things to come out of this pandemic? Your response should be around a 1/2 a page. Feel free to email me [email protected] if you have any questions.
