See attached instructions. I've also linked a few YouTube videos to help you get started. The Things Fall Apart Crash Course videos are especially useful to help you get started and remind yourself of events that happened earlier in the novel.
You will be playing the role of a historian to practice critical reading and thinking skills. Historians make claims based upon evidence in historical sources. In order to gather credible evidence, historians evaluate the reliability, or trustworthiness, of different historical sources. They often do this by considering the point of view and motivations of different historical actors and by comparing how different sources portray historical events. These are all skills that directly transfer to your skills as a reader, writer, and speaker.
You will work on sourcing and contextualizing five documents on the assassination of Patrice Lumumba. First look at the PowerPoint slides to give you some historical context, then read the sources included in the Assassination of Lumumba Worksheet and answer the Guiding Questions for each source. Then you will develop a claim addressing the lesson's Central Historical Question: Why was Patrice Lumumba Assassinated?
This final summary will include chapters 21-25 of Things Fall Apart. Make sure to do the reading BEFORE class on TUESDAY (we will be discussing these chapters in class, so if you have any questions about the reading that's the perfect time to bring them up). Be sure to include ALL important events from this section, with enough details to demonstrate WHY each event is important! This will be the primary way that I insure that you are completing the week's reading, so make sure that your summary is thorough, and free of plagiarism (which will earn you an automatic 0).
Read chapters 21-22 of Things Fall Apart and add information from these chapters to your TFA Culture Notes (keep adding to the same document you've been working on). Submit your TFA Culture Notes to Google Classroom once you've finished chapter 22 and come to class on THURSDAY (because I have a sub on Tuesday) ready to discuss these two chapters. If you haven't started your TFA Culture Notes, there's a Google Doc under the assignment "Read Chapters 1-2 of Things Fall Apart".
