Pre-Calculus

Course Description

Hello Pre-Calculus students. This will be the most intersting Pre-Calculus class I have ever taught. The online curriculum we will be using is through EDGENUITY. The pacing of activities and practice, paper resources, links for virtual meetings, and other announcements will be posted in Google classroom.  Please have patience with me as I build out this class to teach you the content in a way that will be the best for you each of you.  Our weekly Zoom meetings will be held Monday at 1pm and Thursday at 11am. The meetings are not required, but I will gather attendance weekly, based on email communication, Classroom communication and/or Zoom meeting attendance.

May 18 - 22nd Weekly Plan

Well, this is not the best way to start the week off...with Edgenuity not working. I understand that you may not meet your proposed schedule because we don't know how long Edgenuity will be down. I will get the videos for this week by posted by Tuesday morning. I will record the Hyperbolas lesson in last part of today's video call.

NOTE: Next Monday, May 25th, is Memorial Day and a non-school day, so we will not have class on Monday. I hope you all have a restful weekend and take time to remember and honor the men and women who have served in the U.S. military.

Here are the two suggested pacing schedules for this week:
Regular Pace: Complete Edgenuity Lessons: Hyperbolas, Polar Coordinates, & Conic Sections Unit Test (Begin Sequences if time allows)
Accelerated Pace: Complete Edgenuity Lessons: Polar Coordinates, Conic Sections Unit Test & Sequences (Begin Arithmetic Sequences if time allows)

Most students selected preferred meeting times that were within 30 mins of our regular meeting times, on the Weekly Check-in form from last week. Thus, I will not be scheduling individual meetings unless you specifically request one.

May 11 - 15 Weekly Plan

Again, what a great week! The students are doing very well at managing  themselves and their schedules. Good luck to those who have AP Testing this week. From now on, I will be posting a weekly plan, instead of one based on a unit, as some students are interested in working faster than the original pacing of the course. Generally speaking, the original expectation is to get through about two of the Conic Sections Units each week.

Here are the two suggested pacing schedules for this week:
Regular Pace - Get through Egenuity Lessons: Circles & Parabolas, and Ellipses this week (begin Hyperbolas if there is time)
Accelerated Pace - Get through Edgenuity Lessons: Ellipses and Hyperbolas this week (begin Polar Equations if there is time)

Also, so I can better support students, I would like to offer one-on-one or small group meetings. Students, please complete the Meeting Times & Pacing Form in the Google Classroom May 11 - 15 Weekly Plan to designate your preferred time to meet and to let me know what pacing you would prefer to follow. I will send an email out for meeting times for next week based on your responses. If a student wishes to work independently(ie. not attend a virtual meeting), completing the form will count as your contact with me for the week.

I will continue to host the Nerd Thursday meeting every Thursday from 11 - 11:15am (our regular time). I am so sorry I forgot this last week! It will not happen again. I added a Star Wars Section in the Nerd Thursday section of Google Classroom to make up for last week. Send me an email if you have ideas or videos for one of our next Nerd Thursdays!

May 4 - 8 Weekly Plan

Hopefully you are finding a rhythm as we enter our fourth week.

This week is a light week. The scheduled pacing is:
Complete the Vector Unit Test  (this is the only Edgenuity work)
Review Completing the Square and Introduce Conic Sections (this will be a virtual lesson, filmed during Thursday's Zoom meeting)

I have added a Pacing Adjustment Survey in Google Classroom, as a number of students have begun to work ahead. Students, please complete the survey and come to class ready to discuss your thoughts and ideas about altering our current pacing schedule.

April 27 - May 1 Weekly Plan

I continue to be impressed with the work ethic and determination this class has! They are learning to manage their time to attend class, learn in this new curriculum style, complete classwork and still be available to help their family
and/or work. I am really starting to see them "lean in" to their learning. I know not everyone is there yet, but don't worry, you will get there, or at least you will get to a place that works for your situation. Just an FYI, my own kids had a day (OK, maybe two) last week where no school work got done. We are still adjusting to the give and take that this new learning schedule requires.

This week, and most of the rest following, will follow the same pattern:
Monday - Virtual meeting/Office Hours 1pm - Dot Products of Vectors
Thursday - Virtual meeting/Office Hours 11am - Vectors in 3D space
The Vector Unit Test is directly after this...it may benefit the students to take it this week, instead of waiting until next week (as was listed on the initial course outline).

The weekly expectations are:
students will attend meetings for a check-in or email me their progress at least once during the week.
students will get through the specified content pacing on Edgenuity by Sunday.
students will contact me if they are falling behind the pace and/or they did not get a passing score on a quiz.

Thank you for the all of the emails! I am working to respond to them in a timely manner. I really appreciate how we are finding ways to keep in contact (email, phone, Remind, Zoom, etc), and I find the contact helps me better assist the students. Please feel free to contact me with concerns, questions, successes or if you just need to talk.

April 20 - 24 Update

Reminder 1: This Friday, April 24th, will be a regular school day. If you have a class meeting scheduled for that day, it will happen as planned. (We don't ;) )

We begin this week using the online platform Edgenuity, which we will use for the remainder of the trimester. Many of you have already started a class with this platform. If you have not, or are needing help, please let me know.
As learning a new system can be difficult, there may be some adjustments made as we go. One option you will have is to retake your first quiz, if you do not get a passing grade. You must email me to set it up. From then on, you will have one retake available for a failed Unit Test.

Reminder 2: Virtual meetings are Monday @ 1pm and Thursday @ 11am. We will use the link found in Google Classroom and I will open the room about 10 mins before class starts.

This week we will cover:
Mon - Geometric Vectors
Thurs - Algebraic Vectors

Reminder 3: I will spend part of each virtual meeting going over the content for each section, followed by questions. If you have already completed the section, then you are not expected to attend, except to say hello. I'm going to have the first 5 mins be a check-in with general information and greetings...I may have a random question of the day for you to answer. If you are not able to attend a virtual meeting, you are expected to email me your progress and/or questions. If people are interested, we could plan mini-group meetings for those who would like a more in-depth explanation or to review previous sections.

April 13-17 Update

This week is "Review week", in that we are doing Chapter 0 in the book, which is supposed to be review, but covers a few topics that we have not had time to cover before. The expectation is that students will complete all of the sections during this week. Many of these concepts will be used as the students continue in their math career. The assignments and a video of notes fore each section have been posted on Google Classroom. It is a lot, but this class is meant to prepare you for Calculus and this is how Calculus will start, with one week to "Review all the math you have ever learned".

I am available for small group or individual Zoom calls if students get stuck (did one already).  I will not be collecting paper from them, but they will need to write out their work. Students are expected to post or share an image of the work they have done.

Note: If students have questions, the fastest way to get a hold of me is through Remind. I will not post assignments through Remind, that will happen through Classroom, but Remind is the best way to send me a quick message. If you would like to join my Pre-Calculus Remind group please email or see the Google Classroom for the information.

I am still learning how to port Classroom work and/or Edgenuity progress and scores(which begin next week) to HAC and I will update you when that is completed.

I am so pleased with the level of dedication and commitment these students are showing. This is a hard class, and I applaud each one of them for striving to challenge themselves and prepare for future success! If you have questions, comments, or concerns please feel free to reach out and I will get back to you as quickly as I can. And, thank you for letting me teach your student!

First Pre-Calculus virtual meeting

This is our first attempt at a classroom Zoom meeting! Thank you for your patience, let's see how this goes. After this meeting, I will be listing these meetings on Google Classroom, instead of on Edlio, since we should all be on at that point. Hopefully, I will see you soon!

You can join use the link provided or if you have Zoom already downloaded, you can use the meeting ID and Password.

Week 0: Survey & Technology Introduction

This coming week, April 6 - 10th, aka Week 0, we will begin work in classes. This work will be introductory and/or review to prepare you for the content you will be learning in class. The assignments for Mrs. Buenaus' classes will be posted in Google Classroom. This week they will include a survey and some content for you to engage with. Please join the Google Classroom for your class and see the Stream and Assignment list for what you need to complete.

We will also trial the first virtual meetings for classes and explore what we find useful and what we may want to change. This is a time of trials, both easy and challenging, and there will be a LOT of learning. Learning can be hard and sometimes frustrating, so remember to be patient with yourself and each other.

We are TIGERS and we will get through this TOGETHER!
