June 1 - 5 Weekly Update

This week we will finish the Web Development Tools introduction. These lessons are to help you learn about Web Development tools. It is not expected that you know how to pull/push, fork/merge, stage and commit changes in GitHub, but that you know what those terms are. If you continue on a Computer Science pathway, you will learn more about these tools.

There is so much more to learn, but we have run out of time for this trimester. Code.org, Raspberry Pi Code Club, Khan Academy and W3Schools are all great resources to continue to learn about Web Design. We were not able to complete all of Code Clubs' HTML & CSS Module 2, and it has some great resources about learning how to do animation and interactivity. While I will not require you to complete/submit any more of the Raspberry Pi Code Club activities, you will be required in the Final Web Site Project to include at least one extension in your project, i.e. a tag or style or animation/interactivity that we did not cover in class(that you could learn from the Code Club activities). There will be more direction in the Final Web Site Project that will be shared on Wednesday.

The remainder of the trimester is going to have the following pace, modified from them original Course Outline:
Monday June 1: Web Development Tools (Lesson 13 - Version Control and Git/GitHub)
Wednesday June 3: Additional HTML tags and CSS (Lesson 14 - Navigation bar, marquee, Tab label, etc), begin the Final Web Site Project
Monday June 8: Time to work on your Final Web Site Project
Wednesday June 11: Submit your Final Web Site Project

I am thankful for your patience as we have worked through this class, even through it was not in the way originally intended. You continue to strive and give feedback to help me make this class be the best it can be for this trimester. I look forward to seeing your creativity and what you have created in your little piece of online space.

Please complete the Weekly Check-in Form on Google Classroom so I can support you in completing the remainder of the work for this trimester.

As a reminder, to earn a Pass(P) for Web Design, you will need to earn a 60% in HAC for the completion of all of the material for this class. I have modified the curriculum to adjust for the shortened trimester.
If you score lower than a 60%, you will earn an Incomplete. As this class is not in Edgenuity or Odyssey, I do not yet have direction on how you will make up that incomplete, but once I do I will pass it on to you. The information on Google Classroom will remain available through the summer, so you are welcome to access it at any time, but I will not be checking it regularly.

May 18 - 22nd Weekly Plan

THIS WEEK our focus is on CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) aka, the STYLE of your website.
Monday: Code.org Lessons 10 & 11 which explain how to style your text and elements in your page (pictures, etc).
Wednesday: Code.org Lesson 13 which goes over adding colors.
Please complete the Weekly Check-in Form found in Google Classroom...it will be the only one for the week and will let me know your plans for the week (i.e. will you be in the virtual meeting, what you plan to get accomplished this week, etc). You must complete the Form to get the points for this assignment.

NOTE: Next Monday, May 25th, is Memorial Day and a non-school day, so we will not have class on Monday. I hope you all have a restful weekend and take time to remember and honor the men and women who have served in the U.S. military.

Hopefully you have been in contact with your partner to help review your website, but if not, that is OK. If you have not submitted your web site from last week because you have not been able to review it with your partner, please turn in what you have done. I don't want you to lose points because you have not been able to have your partner review your work. Obviously, this would be easier if we were in a classroom, but I don't want it to negatively affect your work during Distance Learning. You should have received a message about partner meetings. I will continue to use those times to work with you on your website and what possible extensions you all are hoping to implement. Please contact me if you have not scheduled an individual(partner) meeting time.

Google classroom grades and TAC will be updated on Tuesday, please check your grades before our Wednesday meeting and if you have any issues, please let me know. Also, if you have changed anything to try to improve your grade on an assignment, please write in the comments what you have done/fixed and then Resubmit. Otherwise, Google does not notify me that you changed anything.

May 11 - 15 Weekly Plan

This is Project Week, kind of like a Midterm, but not really. You will be finishing the first draft of your website in Code.org and gathering together the content you have created in RPi Code Club in the last 4 weeks to showing off what you have learned. This week will end our focus on the HTML or the basic structure of a website. Next week we will begin to explore more of the CSS to add decoration and styles to your web page content.
There will only be one lesson presentation this week, as I want to give students time to work on their website and meet individually or with partners to talk about your thoughts so far and what your needs are moving forward.
Partner groups have been shared in Google Classroom and there is a Google Form for the students to choose when would be the best time to meet in groups or individually.

April 27 - May 1 Weekly Plan

It has been exciting to see the ideas students have for making websites! I look forward to seeing what progress is made by the end of this trimester.

This week in Intro Web Design we are starting the first part of student web pages...the content. We will also be learning the basic structure that all web pages have, HTML tags and headings.

Monday's lesson will introduce you to Code Studio in Code.org and we will continue to work with Raspberry Pi Code Club to explore HTML and CSS that is to come. Wednesday's lesson will talk about your Digital Footprint and continue with Raspberry Pi Code Club. Each day will have a Warm Up question, as well as slides covering the content for that lesson. The assignments will be through Code.org and Raspberry Pi Code Club, as well as other sources (which will be listed as they are needed).

I have begun recording our virtual meetings, during the time I go through the slides and discuss the content. These will be posted in our Google Classroom for students to reference as needed.

April 20 - 24 Update

Reminder: This Friday, April 24th, will be a regular school day. If you have a class meeting scheduled for that day, it will happen as planned (We don't ;) )

Congratulations on completing the first week of Web Design! I know that this is challenging, in many ways, and I want to thank you for showing grace to your teachers (as we learn what and how to present online learning to you) and to yourself (as you learn to organize space, classes, assignments, and time, which seems so fluid). Many of you have been able to complete the first two lessons, well done. If you have not been able to complete the assignments yet, that is OK. We are all adjusting to our new class schedules and how to school from a distance. My expectation is that you will finish the assignments, but they do not need to be perfect and if you need more time, please take it. If there are challenges that you are experiencing that make this class difficult, please email me so we can create a plan for you to be successful.

This week our meetings are: Monday at 11am (this is our new time) and Wednesday at 1pm. We will cover Web Browsers (Mon) and begin to explore the creation websites and brainstorm a personal website ideas (Wed).

The first 5 mins of virtual meetings will be a check-in with general information/greetings and I will have a "Random Question of the Day" for you to answer. Then we will go through the Warm Up and Google Slides Presentation. There will be a time for questions at the end of the meeting. If you are not able to attend a virtual meeting, you are expected to email me your progress and/or questions. If people are interested, we could plan mini-group meetings for those who would like a more in-depth explanation or to review previous lessons.

First Intro to Web Design Virtual Meeting

You all are my first attempt at a classroom Zoom meeting! Thank you for your patience, let's see how this goes. After this meeting, I will be listing these meetings on Google Classroom, instead of on Edlio, since we should all be on at that point. Hopefully, I will see you soon!

You can join use the link provided or if you have Zoom already downloaded, you can use the meeting ID and Password.

Week 0: Survey & Technology Introduction

This coming week, April 6 - 10th, aka Week 0, we will begin work in classes. This work will be introductory and/or review to prepare you for the content you will be learning in class. The assignments for Mrs. Buenaus' classes will be posted in Google Classroom. This week they will include a survey and some content for you to engage with. Please join the Google Classroom for your class and see the Stream and Assignment list for what you need to complete.

We will also trial the first virtual meetings for classes and explore what we find useful and what we may want to change. This is a time of trials, both easy and challenging, and there will be a LOT of learning. Learning can be hard and sometimes frustrating, so remember to be patient with yourself and each other.

We are TIGERS and we will get through this TOGETHER!
